In a world with more than 117 million refugees, REMAR reiterates its commitment to humanitarian assistance and building a better future

On World Refugee Day, the NGO REMAR raises its voice alongside the international community to remember the millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes due to wars, violence, persecution and natural disasters. This year, the motto “Behind every story of refuge, there is an opportunity for solidarity” takes on special relevance, as the number of refugees and displaced people in the world has reached unprecedented numbers.
Alarming figures that call us to act
- At the end of 2023, there were 117.3 million people forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and other events that seriously disrupted public order.
- Millions of refugees and displaced people around the world continue to need help.
- 40% of refugees are boys and girls, who are especially vulnerable to the traumas and difficulties of life in exile
Refugees face a host of challenges:
- Violence and discrimination: Many refugees continue to suffer violence and discrimination in host countries.
- Lack of access to basic needs: They lack access to food, clean water, shelter, medical care and education.
- Trauma and psychological difficulties: They have experienced traumatic situations that have left deep emotional marks on them.
- Uncertainty about the future: They live with the uncertainty of not knowing when they will be able to return to their homes or rebuild their lives.
Behind every story of refuge, an opportunity for solidarity
At REMAR, we have witnessed hundreds of refugee stories over the years. Each one of them, a universe of unique experiences, of broken dreams and reborn hopes. Behind each face, a family, a past, an uncertain future.
For REMAR volunteers, refugees are not just a number, one more statistic in the cold figures of the crisis. Every life is a moving story, a tale of loss and restoration. Behind every look, the pain of having lost everything: home, security, routine, the roots that once defined their identity.
However, in the midst of tragedy, we also find strength. The ability to overcome adversity, to find hope in the darkest. And this is where solidarity becomes an opportunity, a beacon of light that illuminates the path towards reconstruction.
It is through compassionate and selfless action that we can transform despair into hope, loneliness into companionship, uncertainty into a possible future. Solidarity is the key that opens the doors to integration, dignity and the construction of a new life.
At REMAR, we firmly believe that behind every shelter story there is an opportunity for solidarity. An opportunity to extend a helping hand, to offer a safe haven, to provide emotional and material support, to build bridges of understanding and respect.
REMAR: An unwavering commitment to refugees
At REMAR, we not only celebrate this day with words, but we do it with concrete actions that positively impact the lives of refugees. Through our REMAR SOS program, we send missionaries and teams of volunteers to different places in the world where refugee communities are located.
These teams carry out invaluable work, delivering humanitarian aid containers loaded with food, drinks, personal hygiene items, clothing, footwear, household goods, basic necessities and blankets.
Their dedication and commitment are the basis for providing basic and essential assistance to thousands of people who have lost everything.
