REMAR Medellín brings food and hope to homeless people on Gray Avenue, offering rehabilitation, education and support programs
Every week, a group of volunteers from the NGO REMAR carries out invaluable work in the center of Medellín, bringing food to dozens of people living on the streets through the “Angels of the Night” program. This effort is carried out on Avenida de Grey, located in the La Minorista sector, an area known for the high concentration of people in conditions of extreme poverty, drug addiction and mental health problems.
Grey’s Avenue: A Focus of Poverty and Social Problems
Gray Avenue has gained notoriety as a drug consumption area, reflecting the social and economic challenges facing the city of Medellín. Lack of employment, limited access to education and falling behind in school have pushed many people to the poverty line, creating an environment where basic needs are often not met.
In this context, REMAR volunteers arrive every week to offer not only a plate of hot food, but also hope. The food is gratefully received by people struggling to survive in these harsh conditions. However, the work of volunteers goes beyond meeting a physical need. Along with food, they provide words of encouragement and the opportunity for a new beginning through REMAR homes, where people can receive support to overcome their addictions and transform their lives.
Sharing Hope and Offering New Opportunities
The “Street Angels” program is a testament to REMAR’s commitment to the community, working tirelessly to offer a helping hand to those who need it most. Through this initiative, they seek not only to feed bodies, but also to nourish souls, promoting positive and sustainable change in the lives of homeless people.
REMAR’s work is a reminder of the importance of solidarity and community support in building a more just and compassionate society. Amid the challenges facing Medellín, the dedication of these volunteers illuminates the path to a better future for many of its most vulnerable citizens.
