The shadow of insecurity hangs over Haiti, unleashing a wave of violence that has plunged the country into a state of social decomposition. Port-au-Prince, the capital, has become the epicenter of this crisis, with tens of thousands of people forced to leave their homes to flee rampant violence.
Nearly 200,000 people are internally displaced, living in precarious conditions in settlements and collective centers. Armed groups, with limitless cruelty, have carried out attacks, leaving fatalities and destroyed homes in their wake. Communities like Source Matelas have witnessed the horror of these inhumane acts.
Criminal gangs, which control vast areas of the territory, have turned violence into their modus operandi, violating the human rights of the population with total impunity. Women, children and the elderly are especially vulnerable to the brutality of these groups, who do not respect human value or dignity.
Recently, Haiti was in a state of emergency and curfew after the escape from a Port-au-Prince prison of thousands of prisoners (approximately 3,696), which involves 97% of the inmates.
Children are especially vulnerable in these emergency situations. Our boys and girls at the REMAR HAITÍ Home are safe, but we cannot allow them to suffer the consequences of the violence and chaos that reigns in the streets. We need help to move them to a safe place where they can receive the care and protection they need.
