The humanitarian aid camp in Chernivtsi suffers an attack that destroys 70% of its facilities. Despite the adversity, volunteers continue to provide food and shelter to thousands of people
Solidarity Does Not Stop in Chernivtsi
Recently, the humanitarian aid point run by REMAR SOS and Messengers of Peace in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi was devastated by a terrorist attack. This space, which had been a crucial refuge for thousands of people in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, was 70% destroyed, leaving thousands without access to food, medicine and shelter.
The mayor of Chernivtsi and the regional governor confirmed that the attack was an act of terror, pointing to the worsening situation in the region. The camp provided thousands of hot meals a day, along with essential services such as the distribution of clothing and medicine. It also provided a safe space for children and families facing extreme cold, a devastating condition in the middle of the Ukrainian winter.
Tireless Work of Volunteers
Despite the magnitude of the attack, the volunteers of REMAR SOS and Messengers of Peace have not lost heart. Since the first hours after the incident, the team has been working hard to clean up and rebuild the site. A representative of the team said:
“We do not want this attack to stop our work. Whatever happens, we will continue to work to make this camp a safe and hopeful place again. The need remains immense, and people continue to come seeking help.”
As reconstruction progresses, volunteers are preparing and distributing food that does not require electricity, such as sandwiches, salads and hot drinks, to the long lines of people who continue to flock to the site seeking help.
Three Years of Humanitarian Commitment in Ukraine
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, REMAR SOS has been present in the cities of Chernivtsi, Rivne, Lviv and kyiv, bringing hope and assistance to those who need it most. Through its aid points, this NGO has distributed thousands of food rations and provided essential services such as clothing, medicine and shelter. Its work not only focuses on meeting basic needs, but also on offering a space of comfort and support amidst the uncertainty and pain that the war has left in its wake.
The Chernivtsi humanitarian aid camp is one of the pillars of this work, and its reconstruction is essential to continue providing warmth, comfort and dignity to those who have lost everything in this war.
