An oasis of solidarity in the desert of poverty

Volunteers from the NGO REMAR in Iquique, Chile fight poverty and crime with solidarity actions

The volunteers of the NGO REMAR in the city of Iquique, Chile were once again in the town “Jorge Inostroza”, one of the most needy and conflictive areas of the city, to bring food and words of encouragement to the families who reside there.

The “Jorge Inostroza” population is characterized by a high crime rate, especially micro-drug trafficking, robberies and robberies. This situation generates a climate of insecurity and hopelessness among neighbors, especially children and young people who grow up in this environment.

This is why the work of REMAR Iquique is essential for these families. Every week, volunteers visit the population and other vulnerable communities in the city, delivering basic food, a hot meal for those living on the streets, also offering emotional and spiritual support.

On each visit, in addition to delivering food, REMAR volunteers also offer the opportunity to those adults who wish to leave the life of addictions and the streets, to enter the shelter homes that the organization has in Iquique.

Words of hope and a better future

REMAR volunteers not only bring material help, but also words of hope and a message of personal transformation.

“We are here to bring you a message of hope,” said Fernando Muñoz, head of REMAR Iquique. “We want them to know that they are not alone and that there are people who care about and want to help them get ahead.”
