Alarming increase in homeless people in Mendoza leads to a collaboration agreement between REMAR Argentina and the Ministry of Government, Infrastructure and Territorial Development
In response to the alarming increase in homeless people in Mendoza, which has doubled in the last year, the provincial government has taken urgent measures. A collaboration agreement has been signed with the NGO REMAR Argentina to enable 100 temporary accommodation places before the arrival of winter. This initiative seeks to mitigate the impact of low temperatures on the most vulnerable sectors of the population.
Alarming figures and most affected areas
Currently, approximately 500 people are considered to be living on the streets of the city of Mendoza, a figure that has grown significantly compared to last year, when assistance was provided to approximately 200 people. The areas where the most vulnerable people are concentrated are: Plaza Independencia, Parque O’Higgins and the Terminal, where dozens of people gather to spend the night.

An agreement to provide shelter and care
The Collaboration Agreement, signed between the Ministry of Government, Infrastructure and Territorial Development and REMAR Argentina, establishes the use of two properties managed by the NGO REMAR ej Mendoza. According to decree No. 611, published in the Official Gazette, the province will take care of the operating expenses of these spaces, which will offer care and support to homeless people, providing a safe environment to meet their basic needs.
Urgent actions to face low temperatures
In Argentina, winter runs from June 21 to September 20, and low temperatures strongly affect the poorest and homeless people who live in conditions of extreme poverty. In this situation, it is vitally important to take immediate action. Through this agreement, the commitment of the NGO REMAR is reinforced in unity with the Government of Mendoza to improve the living conditions of those who are homeless during the winter season.
The two shelters offer respite to those facing the harsh reality of living on the streets, providing a safe place and the support needed to overcome the difficulties associated with homelessness. REMAR volunteers will be in charge of managing the preparation of a snack in the morning and mid-afternoon, in addition to the cleaning and maintenance of the facilities, bedding, towels, etc.
This collaboration is a crucial step to address the urgent needs of the most vulnerable sectors and guarantee their well-being during the cold months.
