International Day of Peace: Cultivating a Culture of Peace

For over 40 years, REMAR has been promoting a culture of peace in homes and schools, teaching children fundamental values such as empathy, solidarity and respect, which are essential for building a more harmonious future

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly and is celebrated annually on 21 September. In 2024, we commemorate a significant event: the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace by the UN. This document reaffirms that peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but a way of life that we can all actively cultivate.

A culture of peace involves promoting dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, and mutual cooperation. In an increasingly tense world, with wars and conflicts, it is crucial to teach values such as justice, empathy, solidarity, tolerance, and respect. These values allow us to form individuals with wisdom and understanding, capable of contributing to peace in their communities and in global society.

UNESCO, in its constitution, stresses that “since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the ramparts of peace must be built.” This principle resonates today more than ever, reminding us that peace begins in our hearts and thoughts, and that each of us has the capacity to contribute to its construction.

REMAR: Promoting a Culture of Peace for over 40 years

For more than four decades, the NGO REMAR has been committed to promoting a culture of peace through its many programs and foster homes around the world. In a family-like and respectful environment, REMAR homes welcome children, young people and adults who have been rescued from vulnerable situations, creating spaces where peaceful coexistence and non-violent conflict resolution are encouraged.

In REMAR homes, the values of solidarity, empathy, tolerance and non-violence are an integral part of everyday life. These values are transmitted naturally in daily living, and residents learn not only to respect each other, but also to work together, as a family, to create an environment of harmony and cooperation. This training in values not only improves the quality of life within the homes, but also the quality of life of the residents.

homes, but also prepares people to participate positively in society.

Education for Peace from Childhood

In REMAR’s educational centers in various countries, children receive training not only in academic subjects, but also in values for peaceful coexistence. From an early age, they learn the importance of dialogue, conflict resolution, and teamwork. Through daily activities, they are taught that peace is not just an abstract concept, but a reality that they can build in their daily lives.

This peace education not only has an impact on the children’s present, but also prepares them to be future citizens capable of contributing to the creation of more just and peaceful societies. Over the years, REMAR has witnessed the radical change in the lives of many children who, thanks to this education, have been able to overcome situations of conflict and vulnerability, developing as individuals of peace.

True Peace: A Gift Only God Can Give

Despite all human efforts to build peace, REMAR shares the conviction that true peace can only come from God. The NGO teaches that there is no external peace if there is no inner peace, and this inner peace can only be achieved when the human heart is reconciled with God.

REMAR’s work goes beyond providing shelter, education and emotional support; its mission is also to spread a message of spiritual peace. Over the years, many people have experienced a profound transformation in their lives by finding the peace that only God can give. This inner peace allows them not only to heal from their past wounds, but also to find purpose and new hope for the future.

Building Peace in Every Action

On this International Day of Peace 2024, REMAR joins the global call to foster a culture of peace in all areas of life. Peace is not an unattainable ideal, but a reality that we can all build if we promote the right values in our relationships and in our communities. But above all, REMAR reminds us that true peace is a gift from God, and only when we find peace in our hearts, we can bring peace to the world around us.
