Every year on August 31, the world celebrates the International Day of Solidarity, a date proclaimed by the United Nations (UN) with the aim of highlighting the importance of solidarity as a fundamental value for human coexistence.
What is Solidarity?
Solidarity is a fundamental value that involves mutual support and collaboration between individuals and communities. It is the ability to feel and act in favour of those who are in vulnerable situations, recognising that we are all part of the same community and that our actions can have a significant impact on the lives of others. Solidarity manifests itself in empathy, compassion and selfless action to improve the well-being of others.
Ways to be supportive
Solidarity can be expressed in many ways, some of which include:
- Volunteering: Dedicating time and effort to organizations that work on social causes.
- Donations: Contributing financial or material resources to those in need.
- Community Support: Participating in local initiatives that seek to improve the quality of life of the community.
- Education and Awareness: Promoting knowledge and understanding of inequalities and social problems.
- Everyday Acts of Kindness: Helping people in your immediate environment, such as neighbors, friends, or even strangers.

Solidarity on five continents
REMAR is an NGO that has been providing solidarity for 42 years, working in 70 countries on five continents. Its mission is clear: to help the most disadvantaged and offer a second chance to those who need it most.
Faith and love of God are powerful forces that inspire us to live in solidarity and compassion. Love of God teaches us to love our neighbor and to care for those in need. This love drives each REMAR volunteer to be supportive, to offer their time, resources and heart to help the most vulnerable.
Motivated by faith, REMAR volunteers reflect God’s love through concrete actions, bringing hope and support to those who need it most. Some of REMAR’s charitable initiatives include:
- Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Programs: REMAR offers comprehensive support to people in situations of addiction, social exclusion and marginalization, providing accommodation, food and training for their reintegration.
- Humanitarian Assistance: The organization carries out humanitarian aid projects in areas affected by natural disasters, conflicts and extreme poverty.
- Education and Training: REMAR offers educational and vocational training programs for children, youth and adults, thus facilitating their personal and professional development.
- Soup Kitchens and Shelters: They provide food and shelter to homeless people and families in vulnerable situations.
