World Depression Day: Raise Awareness, Understand and Act

Every January 13th, World Depression Day aims to raise awareness about a disease that affects millions. REMAR is an NGO that has been fighting this problem for over 40 years and helping hundreds of people.

Every January 13th, World Depression Day is commemorated, a day aimed at raising awareness and guiding the world’s population about this illness, which affects millions of people and whose prevalence continues to increase at an alarming rate.

Alarming figures: a reality that we cannot ignore

Depression is one of the main causes of disability in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it affects more than 300 million people worldwide, and 2.5 million Spaniards suffer from this illness. However, 50% of those who suffer from depression are not diagnosed, which makes treatment extremely difficult.

In Spain, the rate of depressive symptoms is the highest in the elderly population in Europe. Depression affects approximately twice as many women as men. It is responsible for 1 in 10 sick days and is the second cause of loss of quality of life.

Furthermore, the suicide figures are shocking: 800,000 people take their own lives every year, and depression is present in many of these cases. This data reinforces the need to raise awareness and urgently address this disease.

What is depression?

Depression is much more than a passing feeling of sadness or discouragement. It is a mood disorder characterized by a series of symptoms that significantly affect people’s daily lives:

  • Constant sadness and loss of interest in daily activities.
  • Social isolation and feeling of worthlessness.
  • Sleep and appetite disturbances.
  • Difficulty concentrating and a constant feeling of tiredness.

This disease can often be influenced by genetic, chemical and social factors. It is not a simple weakness or lack of will, but a condition that requires medical attention and a comprehensive approach.

How can we fight depression?

Recognizing the symptoms is the first step in combating depression. Many people are unaware that they are experiencing this condition until it severely impacts their daily lives. Here are some key steps to addressing depression:

  • Faith in God as a starting point to overcome depression: Faith in God and the purpose we have in our lives through faith can   be decisive in our fight against depression.
  • Talk openly: Sharing what we feel with someone we trust can ease the emotional burden and help us find solutions.
  • Adopt healthy habits: A balanced diet, regular exercise and establishing routines can contribute to mental well-being.
  • Foster social connection: Participating in community or volunteer activities can be a way to reconnect with your surroundings and find support.
  • Raise awareness: Educating ourselves about the disease helps reduce stigma and identify early signs in ourselves or others.

REMAR’s work in the fight against depression

For more than 40 years, the NGO REMAR has worked tirelessly to support men and women who are experiencing situations of hopelessness and depression. In REMAR’s foster homes, they are offered not only a safe place, but also an opportunity to rebuild lives through emotional and spiritual support.

Faith plays a fundamental role in this process. By knowing and putting their lives in the hands of God, many people have found a new meaning to their lives, facing the future with renewed hope and purpose. Testimonies from those who came to REMAR in their darkest moments show how love, solidarity and comprehensive support can completely transform lives.

A message of hope

Depression is a challenge that can be overcome. This World Day Against Depression invites us to reflect, act and unite in support of those who suffer from this illness. No one is alone in this battle, and there is always hope for those who decide to take the first step towards recovery.

God’s Word reminds us in Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” These words inspire those facing the darkness of depression to look to faith as a starting point for healing. Through trust in God and the support of those around us, it is possible to find the strength to overcome even the most difficult times.

Thank God, the NGO REMAR continues to be an instrument of hope for those seeking to rebuild their lives, reminding us that, with faith, love and support, it is possible to overcome even the deepest adversities.
