REMAR: Transforming lives, building a drug-free future

On International Anti-Drug Day, REMAR reiterates the importance of prevention as a fundamental tool to build a world free of addictions

On June 26, the International Day to Combat Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is celebrated, a crucial date to strengthen action and cooperation between countries in pursuit of a society free of drug consumption. This year’s 2024 motto, “The evidence is clear: we must invest in prevention,” highlights the importance of prioritizing prevention as a fundamental tool to combat this global problem.

The global drug problem is a reality that affects millions of people and communities throughout the planet, ranging from drug use disorders even in the youngest people to drug trafficking and crime.   The distribution and consumption of illegal drugs have serious repercussions on the health and well-being of people, crossing borders at alarming levels and affecting the security and sustainable development of nations.

Why invest in prevention?

The evidence is clear: prevention is the most profitable investment to combat the drug problem. Numerous studies have shown that every dollar invested in prevention can result in savings of up to $10 in costs related to treatment, criminal justice, healthcare, and lost productivity.

Alarming figures that call us to act :

  • Millions of people around the world suffer from drug use disorders.
  • Illegal drug use causes serious health damage, including illness, overdose and death.
  • Drugs fuel organized crime and violence, destabilizing communities and putting public safety at risk.
  • The drug problem has a devastating impact on the socioeconomic development of nations.
