Helping hands that alleviate the need in Iquique, Chile

Volunteers provide assistance to children and women in extreme poverty

REMAR Iquique volunteers bring hope to families in precarious situations in Laguna Verde

A group of volunteers from the NGO REMAR in Iquique visited the Laguna Verde camp, an irregular settlement located on the outskirts of the city, to provide assistance to families living in precarious conditions.

The volunteers delivered diapers, milk and food to the families, bringing a little relief to their difficult situation and also words of faith, encouragement and hope for women who are going through situations of extreme poverty. Laguna Verde is a place where precariousness and lack of opportunities are daily realities for many.

A focus of attention for REMAR

REMAR Iquique has identified the Laguna Verde camp as one of the places where the largest number of children in vulnerable situations are concentrated, without access to education, good food and care.

Laguna Verde, known to be a concentration point for drug trafficking, is home to thousands of migrants seeking a better life for themselves and their families. Many of them find themselves in a situation of extreme vulnerability, without access to basic services or social protection.

The work of REMAR Iquique for the most vulnerable

In the heart of Iquique, a coastal city in northern Chile where poverty affects almost 25% of the population, the NGO REMAR, driven by the solidarity and commitment of its volunteers, works tirelessly to extend a helping hand to the most people in need.

Its main mission is to provide support and assistance to people in vulnerable situations, especially those struggling with drug and alcohol addictions and   men, women and families living in conditions of extreme poverty.

A refuge of hope

REMAR Iquique opens its doors through its foster homes, offering a safe and warm refuge to those who need it most. In these spaces, people find not only a roof under which to shelter, but also the opportunity to begin a process of recovery and social reintegration.

Iquique hundreds of people live on the streets

The homeless situation in Iquique has worsened, especially for women and children. Added to the usual problems of the local homeless population is that of migrants who are temporarily homeless, while they manage to regularize their condition   and access stable housing.

REMAR Iquique’s action is an inspiring example of how solidarity and commitment can make a significant difference in the lives of the people most in need. Their work not only alleviates hunger and material need, but also offers hope in the midst of their difficult situation.
