The NGO REMAR continues its tireless work, providing shelter, food and a new start to homeless people around the world
October 10, a date to reflect and act
Every October 10th, the International Day of Homeless People is commemorated, a key date to raise awareness of the reality of millions of people who live without a roof or a safe home. Although in some countries this celebration takes place on other dates, its objective is the same: to raise awareness and generate concrete actions to help those who face this very vulnerable situation.
Who are the homeless?
Homeless people are those who lack a safe shelter in which to live and rest each day. In all nations, regardless of their level of development, there are individuals who find themselves in this dire situation. From informal settlements to makeshift camps, or simply sleeping on the streets, millions of people suffer from the lack of a space they can call “home.” This is a global problem that affects hundreds of thousands of people and requires urgent attention.

Alarming data on homeless people
According to 2018 statistics from the United Nations (UN), an estimated 900 million people live in informal settlements or camps. This figure does not include those who live directly on the streets, making the real number even higher. Added to this are the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has further aggravated the situation of those who do not have access to basic services or the security of a roof over their heads.
The life expectancy of a homeless person is estimated to be between 42 and 52 years, which is up to 30 years less than the average of the general population. This condition not only affects people’s physical lives, but also their mental well-being, causing health problems, addictive behaviors, malnutrition, and a deterioration in social relationships.
REMAR’s tireless work in favour of the homeless
For more than 40 years, the NGO REMAR has worked tirelessly in favour of the homeless, opening its doors 24 hours a day to welcome those in need. REMAR not only offers a roof over their heads, but also a hot meal and a word of faith and hope, helping those facing extremely difficult situations.

REMAR USA An example of solidarity
“Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and to bring the poor and homeless into your home? Is it not to cover your neighbor when you see him naked, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?” Isaiah 58:7
A clear example of REMAR’s commitment to the homeless is its work in the United States, specifically in the state of Florida, where for several years, a hot dinner and a word of hope are provided weekly to those living on the streets.
REMAR also offers them the opportunity to enter the foster home, located in Clewiston, Florida, a farm far from the city where the inmates have the opportunity to start a completely new life. In this home, they not only receive a place to live, but also training in agriculture, poultry farming and vegetable gardens. These trades not only allow them to acquire skills, but also help them regain their dignity, proving that they can be useful and contribute to the self-sustainability of the organization.
The reality of homelessness: A privilege we take for granted
We often take having a home for granted, something that seems so natural to many of us. However, having a home is a privilege that millions of people around the world do not have, even in developed countries where wealth and material goods abound.
Homelessness affects all areas of a person’s life: their physical health, mental health, emotional and social well-being. The lack of stability and security that a home provides can lead to despair, isolation and the development of serious health problems.

REMAR: Always extending a helping hand
Since its inception, the NGO REMAR has been committed to giving a hand to those who need it most, especially those who do not have a roof over their heads. On this International Day of Homeless People, REMAR renews its commitment to continue fighting for the most vulnerable people, providing hope, support and opportunities so that they can change their reality.
