On the International Day of the Girl Child, we recognize the courage and strength of girls who have overcome enormous adversities. Thanks to the work of REMAR, many of them have found a new opportunity to live with dignity
Every October 11, the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, a date that seeks to recognize the unique rights and challenges faced by millions of girls globally. Instituted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011, this day invites us to reflect on the urgent need to protect the dignity, integrity and future of girls, especially those in vulnerable situations.
This year, 2024, the motto “Girls’ vision for the future” highlights both the urgency of action and the hope that girls themselves have for a better tomorrow.
Girls at risk: an alarming reality
Worldwide, millions of girls face situations every day that threaten their well-being and future. According to UNICEF, it is estimated that 12 million girls are forced to marry before the age of 18 each year. In addition, 1 in 5 girls has suffered physical or sexual violence at some point in her life, and many of them live trapped in cycles of poverty, without access to education or necessary care.
REMAR: Restoring hope and future for thousands of girls
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
Yet, amidst these alarming realities, REMAR has been a beacon of hope for thousands of girls around the world. Since its inception, REMAR has worked tirelessly to rescue girls at risk, providing them with safe shelter, educational opportunities, and above all, restoring their dignity. These girls, many of whom have suffered abuse, neglect and exploitation, have found in REMAR a place where their lives have been completely transformed.
A safe home and a new opportunity to learn and grow
Throughout more than four decades of work, REMAR has impacted the lives of countless girls living in desperate situations. Thanks to the work of its volunteers and their commitment to faith, these girls have witnessed the love of God, which has guided them on their path to recovery and a full life.
Girls who arrived at REMAR homes with fear and sadness, today smile with hope, learning, receiving an education and forging a future that seemed impossible. Every year, more girls manage to escape the cycle of poverty, abuse, and lack of opportunities, and find the chance to study and dream of a better life.
Testimonies of transformation: from vulnerable girls to strong women
The most inspiring thing is to see how many of the girls who were once rescued by REMAR are now adult women who have overcome those adversities. Women who found in REMAR not only a door of help, but a new family. They are now mothers, wives and volunteers dedicated to serving others, with the same hope that one day rescued them.
The testimony of these women, who went from darkness to light, is a reminder of God’s transforming power in their lives. These girls, who once had no hope, are now examples of strength and joy. As mothers and caregivers, they have not only changed their own destinies, but also those of their children and families.
Help change a girl’s future
At REMAR we believe that every girl has a purpose and that her life should be valued and protected. Through the work of the NGO REMAR, thousands of girls have been given the opportunity to live the life they deserve, with dignity, security and love.
Today, on this International Day of the Girl, we invite you to be part of this change. REMAR continues to work to rescue and transform the lives of more girls around the world, giving them an opportunity to grow and prosper. Your donation, however small, can make a difference.
