Progress in REMAR’s Health and Agriculture Projects in Equatorial Guinea

REMAR Equatorial Guinea reports on the progress of its initiatives in health and agriculture, promoting the well-being of the most vulnerable communities

The NGO REMAR in Equatorial Guinea shares important progress in its Agricultural Farm and Health and Healthcare projects, initiatives that continue to grow and evolve day by day. Despite facing challenges, REMAR continues to make a great effort to improve the living conditions of the population of Equatorial Guinea, demonstrating its commitment to the fight against malnutrition and access to adequate health care.

Objective and Progress in the Agricultural Farm

Since the project’s inception, the farm’s main objective has been to ensure food self-sufficiency for REMAR’s foster homes, generating income and training young people in agricultural skills. It also seeks to motivate neighbouring communities to implement similar initiatives and sell surpluses to cover operating costs.

Recent Work and Current Status:

The farm is currently in good condition, in a rainy season that facilitates natural irrigation of crops. Several sowings and harvests have been carried out:

  • Ocro sowing in May, with the last harvests underway.
  • Induction of Pineapples in September, achieving that 30% are in the flowering phase, a strategy that will allow continuous harvests.
  • Crops planted in September, such as peanuts, have entered the flowering phase and harvest is expected shortly.
  • New crops of ochre and white aubergines have been planted recently, while the harvest of violet aubergines is planned for next month.
  • Tests with onions and tomatoes are underway to analyse soil fertility in these crops.

Cultivated Plot Details: Each plot has been carefully designed to maximize the yield of various essential crops. Highlights include:

  • Peanut Plot: 3,150 m²
  • Corn Plot: 2,450 m²
  • Yucca Plot: 1,800 m²

Other plots include crops of malanga, bananas, sugar cane, vegetables and more.

Challenges on the Farm: The need for machinery to transform certain products, such as tubers, into flour, improving their conservation and optimizing their nutritional value, has been identified.

Thanks to continuous efforts, the farm is in optimal conditions, with constant monitoring of crop growth and the success of the sowing carried out the previous month.

Health and Healthcare Report

In the health area, REMAR’s small first aid kit has provided primary care to residents and responded to emergencies. This service is essential to address first-hand needs and respond in urgent situations.

Objectives and Improvements in Care:

The first aid kit focuses on providing first aid to the resident children and young people, treating minor injuries and common aches and pains. This month, a referral method to the local hospital has been implemented for more complex symptoms, ensuring an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

During the month, 10 cases were treated, of which 2 were referred to the Bata Regional Hospital for further investigation. Among the serious cases, one included a child with complicated asthma and two newly admitted babies with severe dehydration.

Challenges in Health Care:

  • Lack of laboratory equipment for specific analyses, such as malaria and typhoid tests, and the lack of basic supplies (gloves, alcohol, syringes).
  • Limitations on suitable furniture for the care space.

Despite the challenges, REMAR’s health team in Equatorial Guinea is committed to keeping residents healthy through innovative methods and working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. This month, a campaign was launched to prevent diseases such as malaria, by reinforcing health and hygiene education and distributing mosquito nets.
