REMAR: Early Response and Sustainable Action in Global Crises

With a presence in 70 countries, REMAR stands out for its capacity to respond to disasters, promoting sustainability through clean energy and a zero-waste philosophy

The ability to respond early is a decisive advantage that Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have in the face of crises and emergencies of various kinds: from natural disasters to health and migration crises. Since 2007, we have experienced a series of catastrophes that have tested global resilience, and the NGO REMAR has been on the front line, offering vital support thanks to its extensive territorial presence. With offices in 70 countries and three strategically located logistics centres, the organisation has played a crucial role in environmental disasters and humanitarian emergencies, demonstrating that a rapid and effective response can save lives and reduce suffering.

A Global Presence That Makes a Difference

REMAR’s extensive global network has been key in the rapid response to large-scale crises. Logistics centres in Switzerland, Guatemala and Mali have enabled the rapid mobilisation of resources, optimisation of distribution routes and reduction of delivery times, which is vital when every minute counts. The structure of the NGO REMAR has been essential not only for the distribution of humanitarian aid, but also for managing logistics and the administration of resources effectively, contributing to a coordinated and efficient response.

Lessons in Early Response: Exemplary Cases

  • Peru Earthquake (2007) : With a magnitude of 8.0, this earthquake struck southern Peru, leaving behind a devastating toll: 596 dead, more than 1,300 injured, and 76,000 homes destroyed. REMAR, present on the ground and with quick access to resources thanks to its logistics centers, was able to provide immediate assistance, providing shelter, food, and emotional support to those affected. This response was not only rapid, but also sustained, allowing for a gradual and more organized recovery for the affected communities.
  • Haiti Earthquake (2010): This 7.3 magnitude disaster was one of the region’s worst humanitarian crises in over 200 years, killing over 220,000 people and leaving 1.5 million homeless. REMAR’s presence was instrumental in delivering food, clean water, medicine and other essential resources in record time. During the first year of the crisis, the organization also played a crucial role in combating the cholera outbreak and providing long-term support, helping victims find stability amid the chaos.
  • Refugee Crisis in Europe (2015): The migration crisis that hit Europe in 2015 was one of the most challenging in recent times, with more than 911,000 refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean in search of safety. REMAR not only distributed food, clothing and offered shelter to those fleeing conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, but also played an essential role in coordinating with other CSOs and government agencies. Its rapid response capacity allowed it to provide comprehensive assistance that included not only physical resources, but also psychological support to people traumatized by the conflict.
  • COVID-19 pandemic (2020): The COVID-19 pandemic triggered an unprecedented global crisis, with millions of deaths and a devastating economic impact. The NGO REMAR quickly adapted its structure to provide assistance in more than 70 countries, distributing food, hygiene products and personal protective equipment to those who needed it most. REMAR’s ability to mobilize resources and optimize logistics was key to alleviating the impact of the crisis, supporting both local communities and international support networks in the fight against the pandemic.

From Response to Climate Action: A Comprehensive Strategy

Early response not only has immediate effects on crisis mitigation, but also plays an important role in climate action. By having three strategically located logistics centres, REMAR not only manages to reduce delivery times and operating costs, but also optimises its routes to reduce CO2 emissions. This shows that it is possible to align humanitarian objectives with a climate agenda, minimising the environmental impact of aid operations.

Clean Energy and Zero Waste: REMAR’s Commitment to Sustainability

An innovative example of this approach is the “REMAR CON ENERGÍA” project, an initiative that seeks to integrate clean energy into its headquarters in Spain. This investment in renewable energy not only significantly reduces operating costs, but also expands the capacity to accommodate new residents and provides low-cost electricity for entrepreneurs within the vulnerable communities that REMAR serves. This model promotes sustainability and demonstrates that CSOs can play a key role in the transition to a greener economy.

Furthermore, REMAR is committed to the philosophy of zero waste, making the most of donated resources and ensuring that they reach those who need them most. This strategy not only optimizes the use of goods in times of crisis, but also promotes long-term sustainability in the management of humanitarian aid, complementing the actions of governments and multilateral organizations around the world.

Empowering Communities to Overcome Crises: An Ongoing Commitment

Over the course of 45 years, REMAR has woven a network of alliances, agreements and strategies that allow it to act quickly and efficiently wherever it has a presence. Its commitment to the most vulnerable communities has been unwavering, and its model of action combines rapid response with a long-term vision that integrates sustainability and climate action. In times of crisis, CSOs like REMAR not only provide immediate relief, but also contribute to building a more resilient and sustainable future.

In a world where environmental, health and migration crises continue to affect millions of people, REMAR’s early response approach demonstrates that local action, backed by a global presence, is essential to mitigate the impacts of disasters and improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable people. Its focus on climate action, sustainability and logistical innovation sets a precedent for other organizations seeking not only to save lives, but also to contribute to the long-term well-being of the planet.

REMAR will continue to be a fundamental pillar in the response to global crises, committed to a mission that goes beyond immediate relief to forge a path towards resilience and sustainability worldwide.
